The rate of type II diabetes has tripled (from 1.1% to 3.3%) between 1995 and 2008.[1]

The estimated healthcare expenditure for diabetes in 2008-09 was $1.5 billion, with at least 60% of this due to type II diabetes.[2] When taking into account additional costs including those borne by carers, community resources, government benefits and indirect costs, this figure is estimated to be $6 billion.[3]
